Also I suggest you sign up on the CMP Forum they have alot of carbine experts.
M1 Carbine S Serial Number IsA 6 digit serial number is much earlier than the 11-44 barrel date. The SA marked handgrips are post-war replacement parts made at Springfield Armory. The cast number on the buttplate is not where I would expect to see it, and it is normally found adjacent to a wagon wheel mark and another digit which is commonly accepted as a mold position number. The OI in the forestock well looks correct and the cheekpiece leather and rivets look right as rain. Most carbine folks theorize the numbered rivets were brake lining rivets. The forestock, to me, looks like a typical 2nd contract sapwood stock. Another reason I dont call fake is that it doesnt make much sense to me hump up a gun into a post-war mixmaster, especially with the volume of legit post-war rebuilds coming out of CMP. SA made pistol grips were easy to find a few years ago, so that does not prove anything. The SA Pistol Grip is definitely a standard USGI replacement part for the M1A1. Type IV trigger housing, flip safety, Type III Adjustable sights, type III Barrel band. The front sight post should be marked with an N (Nieder Rifle Sight Co) just behind the sight blade.
